SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, December 28, 2021 – The Seoul Facilities Corporation established the Ttareungyi Metaworld for teenagers. The corporation will provide bicycle safety awareness classes to adolescents in avatar form in this world. According to data accumulated from January to November, teenagers accounted for 5% of the total Ttareungyi users, and the figures are inching up every year.

Ttareungyi, Seoul’s public bike rental service, is one of the most popular public services in Seoul. It has 3.3 million members, and the accrued number of rides amounts to 89.82 million. Currently, there are 40,500 Ttareungyi bikes are available in Seoul. Next year, the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) plans to add 3,000 more bicycles to its fleet.

Ttareungyi Metaworld has two spaces: the safety training center and the public relations office. At the safety training center, citizens can take a bicycle-related safety awareness course, play games, and take quizzes by looking at traffic signs. Also, there are road testing sites for bicycles
where avatars can pass crosswalks, intersections, stretch roads, and curvy roads while riding a bike.

In the public relations office, visitors can get information about Ttareungyi’s progress and development since 2010, how to use the service and its carbon reduction effects. In addition, different types of Ttareungyi bikes are on display. Photo studio, souvenir booth, and café are also available.

By the end of this year, the city government will introduce a “usage ranking system” where riders of Ttareungyi can check their weekly and monthly riding ranking through the Ttareungyi application and website. Next year, the SMG plans to add more features, such as safety equipment for avatars.

“Ttareungyi is a convenient means of transportation, but safety should always come first,” said Cho Sung-il, Chairman of the Seoul Facilities Corporation. “To improve the safety of the bicycle, we are strengthening the frame and adding warning reflectors to wheels. We will continue to work on the safety so that citizens can use Ttareungyi without any danger.”
