  • Seoul Appoints Former Ambassador to the UN as Ambassador for International Relations

    On July 23, the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) appointed Paik Ji-ah, former Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations in Geneva, as the 20th Ambassador for International Relations.

    With her extensive knowledge, experience and professional expertise in the field of diplomacy, Ambassador Paik will provide advice on the SMG’s international exchange, such as exchange with overseas cities, hosting of international events, and invitation of international organizations. Ambassador Paik will also contribute to enhancing Seoul’s international prestige by sharing the SMG’s excellent policies for smart city, transport, climate action, and more with the world.

    Having built diverse experiences over the last 36 years, Ambassador Paik is evaluated as an international relations expert well-versed in the fields of diplomacy and security. After graduating from the Department of Diplomacy at Seoul National University and joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985, Paik has served the positions as the Director for International Organizations, Deputy Representative to the UN, Ambassador for International Security Affairs, Deputy Minister for Planning and Coordination, President of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security at Korea National Diplomatic Academy, and Ambassador to the UN in Geneva.

    While serving as Ambassador to the UN, Ambassador Paik represented Korea at a number of international organizations located in Geneva, such as the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), World Trade Organization (WTO), and World Health Organization (WHO). At the same time, she has been striving to increase Korea’s national interest and activate international cooperation by serving as the information group chairperson at the International Labour Organization (ILO).

    Ambassador Paik promised, “I will perform my role as Ambassador for International Relations to the fullest so as to expand the SMG’s international exchange and cooperation.”
