How can urban agriculture save cities and Earth?
The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is hosting the online 2021 Seoul International Conference on Urban Agriculture at DDP from Mon, Nov. 8 to Thu, Nov. 11 for four days. This marks the 10th anniversary of the conference, which has been held to form international urban agriculturalists’ solidarity and create sustainable cities by facilitating sharing of diverse cases of urban agriculture and collaborations.
To emphasize the role and practices of urban agriculture not only as of the problem solver for social issues but also the countermeasures for climate change, this year’s 10th conference invited 16 experts from seven countries, including France, Cuba and Japan, to share examples of international cities and outstanding programs.
The 2021 Seoul International Conference on Urban Agriculture will run for four days, featuring programs such as the conference on the topic of the role of urban agriculture to achieve carbon neutrality amidst climate change, the World Congress of City Farmers to facilitate exchange and solidarity of international city farmers, and a farmers’ workshop to share knowledge required at the field of urban agriculture.
The farmers’ workshop will be held from Mon, Nov. 8 to Wed, Nov. 10 and offer lectures that introduce topics that can be applied in real life. The overall theme is the necessity for wisdom to harmonize the sky, earth and humans as taught by Eastern philosophy.
In the morning of Thu, Nov. 11, the main event of the international conference will be held at the Seoul ON studio at DDP (2F, Design Lab) to discuss the role of urban agriculture in the age of climate change and decade of Seoul’s urban agriculture under the topic of “the role of urban agriculture to achieve carbon neutrality.”
Later in the day, Walter Jehne (founder of Regenerate Earth, climate scientist and soil microbiologist) from Australia will give a presentation under the topic of “Urban Agriculture: The Final Chance for the Humanity for Safe Residence and Climate.” After the presentation, urban agricultural experts from each country will share examples of urban agriculture, such as Cuba’s agricultural ecology and France’s environmental movements, to seek directions for further development.
Followed by the conference, the World Congress of City Farmers will be held for the first time this year. This event is expected to facilitate an opportunity for exchanges and solidarity of global farmers to find the role of urban agriculture to overcome the climate crisis. Urban agriculturalists from each country that participated in this year’s conference will present and read the Declaration of World City Farmers, a declaration written under the topic of “Climate farmers who save cities and Earth.”
