The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is hosting the 2021 Seoul International Photojournalism Exhibition: New Normal Life, a photo exhibition held online and offline to display 86 photos taken by international photojournalists that show a glimpse into the new normal life of this pandemic-era.

The 2021 Seoul International Photojournalism Exhibition, co-hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the global photo news agency PENTA PRESS, displays a wide array of photos taken by a total of 68 international photojournalists from global media outlets, including The New York Times, The Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, and the EPA. The offline exhibition will feature photos posted on the outer walls of the Seoul Metropolitan Library from Tue, Nov. 16 to Sun, Dec. 12, while the online exhibition will be held on the SMG’s foreign language website until Mon, Dec. 20.

The exhibition comprises main and special exhibits. The main exhibit displays 56 photos under the theme of “New Normal Life” catching the happiness, sadness, pain, and anguish from the lives around the world since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The special exhibit features a total of 30 photos chosen from both the Pulitzer Prize-winning works taken by The New York Times and the 2021 Yearend News Photos selected by the newspaper.

The photos exhibited this year were selected by a selection committee consisting of four domestic and international photo experts.

The SMG will upload all the photos of the exhibition online, including social media, so that more citizens can see the photos on their computer and smartphone. In particular, the 360-degree virtual gallery using VR provides a unique experience of viewing the photos against the walls of the Seoul Metropolitan Library and the real view of the Seodaemun Prison History Hall.

The 21 photos out of the total 86, photos that are highly likely to arouse sympathy from the citizens, are exhibited along the outer walls of the first floor of the library so that the visitors can walk around the library to see the photos while social distancing.

During the photo exhibition, the SMG is encouraging citizens to visit the exhibition through various participatory events, promoting its global images to the world as a city that quickly responds to the period of new daily life while actively leading changes.
