Starting tonight, central Seoul will be putting on a big light show every evening through the new year. The first light show is happening as we speak, right now, at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza in downtown Seoul. And our Choi Jeong-yoon is right there as it’s happening.

Jeong-yoon, tell us more about the show.

    [Reporter]

Hi, Aram. What you see behind me is ‘SEOULLIGHT’, a massive light show projected onto the outer wall of Dongdaemun Design Plaza, or DDP.

The 220 meter wide surface of the entire building is now a canvas for lights, video and music.

To make the show stand out as much as possible, nine big buildings nearby have turned off their own lights.

This is part of a winter festival organized by Seoul and the Seoul Design Foundation, held for the first time this year. The theme is “Seoul Haemong”, which means interpreting a dream, and in that vein, the history of Seoul has been recombined and recomposed by artificial intelligence.

Here’s what the artist had to say, and also a visitor who was really impressed..

[Refic Anadol, media artist and director]

“What else we can do with AI in a way is that we can open our imagination. How we can train our next generations of humankind, in a way that they can learn from these tools, to create just deeper connections with the city itself.”

    [a resident]

“Anyone could have these ideas in their head, but the fact that DDP could actually express these ideas in such beautiful ways made be feel proud to be a Korean. And also, the content touched my heart. Honestly, it almost brought me to tears.”

Looks amazing, Jeong-yoon. How long is the festival going to go on for, and what else is there to do there?

    [Reporter]

You can enjoy the light show everyday until January 3rd.

There will be four 16-minute shows a day, every hour, from 7 to 10 PM.

Along with the show, visitors can do some shopping for the holidays.

Some 270 individuals and companies have come to sell crafts and fashion.

58 containers and tents will be set out around DDP and will run from 12 pm to 10 pm.

There are also some concerts, street performances, and food trucks to enjoy.

To welcome the year 2020, there will be a special video of fireworks on New Year’s Eve and a countdown from 3 minutes before the new year begins.

That’s all I have for now.

Well, thank you, Jeong-yoon. It certainly does look well worth checking out.
