  • [2015] Mayor’s Speech SMG 2346

Opening Ceremony at Korea Urban Agriculture Expo 2014
Date: June 4, 2015 Venue: Seoul Plaza

Greetings, everyone! I am Park Won-soon, the Mayor of Seoul. I would like to express my warm welcome to citizens participating in the 4th Korea Urban Agriculture Expo 2014.

It has long been known that agriculture is the foundation of a nation, but I believe that agriculture will remain as the most important industry in our society for years to come. In the aftermath of global environmental problems and food crises, agriculture, and especially urban agriculture, will grow into a backbone of a new future industry. In this context, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has been trying to recover our eco-systems and communities through urban agriculture since I declared the year to be the beginning of an urban farming era in 2012. Notably, last April, the Seoul Metropolitan Government also announced a development plan in the 2nd phase of urban agriculture after communicating with fellow citizens and collecting their valuable opinions. As a result, many citizens can now enjoy great comfort and a place to rest by implementing the various forms of urban agriculture in their own kitchen gardens, rooftops, and porches.

That is why the Korea Agriculture Expo 2014 is focused on the urban agriculture of daily life, which can be easily conducted in homes, schools, companies, and rural communities under the theme of urban agriculture embodied in daily life.

When you take a look at our surroundings, we find it easy to spot places for conducting urban agriculture, such as apartment porches and kitchens, schools, and rooftops in offices. I hope that by taking advantage of such unused available places cities, gardens will allow urban agriculture to have a firmer footing in our daily life, further growing into a future industry with high potential.

Korea Agriculture Expo 2014 will allow the Seoul Metropolitan Government to present a new paradigm of agriculture, conducted in a form in which the lifestyles of human beings and nature co-exist. In addition, this Expo will encourage the city of Seoul to become a global urban agriculture special city.

Once again, I would like to deeply thank Seoul citizens who conduct urban farming and have put in so much effort in hosting this Expo and citizens who join this.

Fellow citizens! Agriculture is the future. Agriculture is economy. Agriculture is life. Would you please stand with us? Thank you.
