Seoul is holding this year’s Seoul International Garden Show online as Virtual SIGS 2020, bringing together garden experts, who are unable to participate in person, from around the world for 11 days from October 8 to 18, 2020.
SIGS 2020 is an extended, international version of the Seoul Garden Show that was launched in 2015. Unlike other garden shows that focus on fancy attractions, SIGS has set a new milestone for garden shows, pursuing urban regeneration to create and manage green gardens in villages throughout the city with citizens.
The creation of gardens and offline events will be postponed to May 2021 in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and in consideration of public safety. This year will focus instead on online garden culture programs to continue to make Seoul a green city.
Virtual SIGS 2020 will feature an online briefing session for the gardens that will be exhibited in May 2021, an online international conference including the International Garden Symposium 2020 and Garden Webinar where world-top experts in landscaping and garden will participate, and citizens’ participatory programs that will be broadcast online.
Firstly, 2020 International Garden Symposium Week will take place for seven days from October 8 to re-examine the role of public gardens as urban green infrastructure through presentations by garden experts from different countries. The keynote speaker will be Piet Oudolf, a Dutch garden designer.
Then on October 15, International Webinar on Urban Regeneration and Alley Gardens will take place to look into the cases of alley regenerations not only in Seoul but other international cities. The keynote speech will be presented by Niall G. Kirkwood, professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, on the theme of “Innovative Design for Vitalization of Alleys.”
Viewers will be able to watch online the gardens that will be created and preserved in 2021 in advance. From October 8 to 18, Seoul will disclose one by one the designs of invited gardens, artists’ gardens, and students’ gardens that will be created in May 2021 through the official YouTube channel of Virtual SIGS 2020.
Virtual SIGS 2020 content will be uploaded on its official YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/Seoulgardenshow). For more information, visit the Virtual SIGS 2020 website (https://festival.seoul.go.kr/garden).
