Extracting Honey from a Beehive on the Rooftop of Seoul City Hall
Date: June 5, 2012
Venue: Rooftop of Seosomun Building, Seoul City Hall
When did we start keeping bees on the rooftop of Seoul City Hall? It started in April, and prompted many questions regarding whether beekeeping is actually possible at the center of Seoul.
But, as you can see, downtown Seoul is clean enough to extract honey from a beehive.
The idea for this practice actually originated with a small gift from a Japanese social entrepreneur. He gave me a cookie made with honey that was extracted from a beehive on the rooftop of a department store in Ginza, the busiest district in Japan.
This beekeeping initiative was made possible by Seoul’s numerous, lush mountains and with the help of the Korean Apiculture Association.
I think urban agriculture such as this brings pleasure to life, and creates some joy in our extremely stressful daily lives.
Today, let’s have a pleasant conversation while dipping pieces of rice cake in honey.
