The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) has completed renovations for three areas (i.e. residential, commercial, and industrial) in Seoul—Chungsin Upper City Wall Village (Chungsin-dong, Jongno-gu), Hwagok Jungang Market (Hwagok-dong, Gangseo-gu), and Gasan Digital Complex (Gasan-dong, Geumcheon-gu)—as a part of its Universal Design* in Urban Public Spaces Project.
* Universal design: Design of buildings, products or environments to make them accessible to all people, regardless of age, disability or other factors.
The project comprised renovating the old stairs of Chungsin Upper City Wall Village located on a hill so that residents can safely use the stairs at night with additional street lights and wavy handrails to assist residents, redesigning the information boards in Hwagok Jungang Market to have bigger letters, pictograms and lights so that visitors can clearly see them from a distance, and installing benches and trees by Gasan Digital Complex Station to transform the old smoking zone into a pleasant public space for resting.
The SMG has been carrying out its Universal Design in Urban Public Spaces Project to address the risks and inconveniences that citizens experience in public spaces of their day-to-day life through design. The project so far improved eight public spaces and facilities, including elderly halls and public health centers. In addition, the SMG also published and distributed guidebooks on universal design and its renovations to promote the project’s spread to other institutions and the private sector.
The three project areas of this season were selected from the annual public contest held since 2018. The SMG and municipal districts studied and analyzed the characteristics of each area and their main users, and encouraged active and pragmatic participation of residents across the project process to reflect their various demands. In particular, the project was aimed to maximize the impact of renovation by linking it to other projects in the areas.
The SMG will make guidebooks for various types of areas that are similar to these three areas, and plans to distribute them to relevant departments for utilization.
