The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that the City achieved the effect of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 9,536 tons (equal to the emissions emitted by a mid-sized sedan traveling the Seoul-Busan-Seoul route 54,000 times) through a pilot project for carbon emissions trading in 2011. The result is equivalent to the planting of 1.39 million pine trees aged 35 years.

The carbon emissions trading pilot project is designed to provide an opportunity to exercise carbon emission rights to businesses that emit a large volume of greenhouse gases. The project is already being implemented by major local governments, including those of Seoul and Busan, prior to the official inauguration of the system, which is scheduled for 2015.

So far, eighty-three public institutions and seven private businesses have taken part in the pilot project, which included an adjustment of the hours of operation of air-conditioning and heating, the replacement of ordinary lighting with LED lighting, an energy-saving campaign, and the application of heat-insulation to buildings. The participating institutions engaged in mock carbon emission trading amounting to 12,947 tons of greenhouse gases, for a value of KRW 445.68 million (KRW 34,423 per ton).
