The SMG plans to expand the ‘Safe Parcel Delivery Service for Women’ which was introduced last year. So far, 50 free unmanned parcel boxes have been run for the service, and the city government will install additional boxes to benefit more women.

The ‘Safe Parcel Delivery Service for Women’ allows women to get their parcels back without concern for security as they can receive their parcels from the box without having to meet a delivery man (often a criminal disguise themselves as a delivery man to deceive a victim). For the convenience of the users, the unmanned parcel boxes are installed in the main resident areas.

The SMG decided to introduce the service last year as many single women felt unsafe as they open their door for a delivery man and as there are female office workers who cannot stay home to receive parcels.

Encouraged by the wide popularity of the service among citizens, the city government will install additional boxes in about 50 districts this year, running 100 unmanned delivery box systems in total. As a result more citizens will be able to benefit from the service.

The ‘Safe Parcel Delivery Service for Women’ also ranked 5th in the best city policy for “Seeds for Hopes’ according to a survey last year in which about 6000 citizens votes their favorite among 30 new business items and polices of the SMG.

The SMG has installed and ran the women-friendly parcel delivery system across the city since June, 2013, after a careful pilot operation in January. And the accumulated usage number of the system in the 50 districts has exceeded 100,000, recording 108,343 on January, 31, 2014.

In its first year of the service introduction, the monthly service usage rate showed steady increase, recording 14,503, 18,412 and 17,868 in September, October, and November, respectively. And in December, the number was as many as 20,737.

Some of the system in 50 areas has seen the demand surpass the supply, calling for additional installation of the boxes. Those overflowed areas include; ▴Songpa Women Culture Center at Songpa-gu ▴Women Empowerment Center at Gwangjin-gu ▴Jeungsan Public Library at Eunpyeong-gu ▴Woori Bank Dongjak-gu branch ▴Myeonmokbon-dong Community Service Center at Jungnang-gu.

Many female citizens also called for additional box installation through civic complaint channels including phone calls. Ms. Kim, who resides in Bulgwang-2dong, Eunpyeong-gu requested an installation of the box system around Bulgwang-2dong Community Center where many multiple complexes and row houses, while Ms. Jang in Jingwan-dong suggested that the installation of the box system at Jingwan-dong Community Service Center, which is located near many detached houses, will reduce the risk of a parcel loss and be very useful for single-households.
