Launching “supervisors of eco-friendly, safe food material at schools”
Date: April 3, 2013
Venue: Multipurpose Hall, Seoul City Hall
My mother always used to say, “When you eat, look around to see if the people around you are eating as well.” Although my family was not rich, my mother was always considerate of anyone around us who might have been hungry or couldn’t afford to eat. The lessons she taught be in this regard led me to push for free school meals.
Now that we have a free school meal system in place, the next task I am focusing on is how to ensure the quality of the food. On behalf of the children and their parents, investments of time, effort, and resources are needed to ensure the supply of safe and nutritious foods at our schools.
Today, we now have special supervisors to ensure that all ingredients are eco-friendly and safe. I would like to thank the parents and civic organizations that agreed to carry out these supervisory activities and monitor the production, supply, and distribution channels of safe, eco-friendly food materials.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has created the “Metropolitan Meals Support Center”—the first local government to do so—in order to expand the supply of safe, quality ingredients and eco-friendly school meals. In particular, Seoul Metropolitan City, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, and private sector organizations launched a collaborative governance system on January 1, 2013.
The Metropolitan Meals Support Center will monitor the distribution of food materials used to make school meals and inspect production sites in order to develop a better understanding of eco-friendly foods and achieve enhanced communication and sharing with the producers.
As you know, my nickname is “Meticulous Won Soon”. But I hope that you will carry out your tasks even more carefully, elaborately, and thoroughly than I do, as the responsibility for the safety and nutrition of our children’s school meals rests on your shoulders. I look forward to your active support and cooperation. Thank you.
