  • “Special Event for Seollal Holidays” at Traditional Markets

  • Economy & Investment News SMG 1267

With Seollal, the most important holiday for Koreans, just around the corner, 139 traditional markets in downtown Seoul will hold a special event for the Seollal holidays, where they will sell supplies for ancestral rites at discount prices and give free gifts.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced that 139 traditional markets in Seoul will sell supplies for ancestral rites as well as agricultural, marine and livestock products at 50% off from Fri, Jan. 29 to Wed, Feb. 10, 2021.

50% off Supplies for Ancestral Rites, and Free Gifts/Certificates Per Purchase Amount or When Using Zero Pay

The traditional markets that participate in the event will sell supplies for ancestral rites as well as agricultural, marine and livestock products at discounted prices of 5% to 50% off. Each market will hold an event where they offer Onnuri Gift Certificates or rice cake for making rice cake soup when purchasing more than a certain amount or paying with Zero Pay.

In addition, there will be a sharing event for vulnerable classes and the elderly at three markets (Gongneung-dong Dokkaebi Market, Hwagok Central Alley Market, and Namseong Sagye Market). A merchant who decided to share rice cakes and meat with vulnerable groups in this difficult period due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation said, “We, small businesses, are going through unprecedented difficult times, but every citizen has their own tolls—small or large. I wish everyone can cooperate to overcome this hard situation.”

Discounts on Yeonggwang Yellow Corvina, A Chance to Buy High-Quality Products at Low Prices

Additionally, the SMG sells 4,386 sets of Yeonggwang yellow corvina for 30% off for five days from Sat, Jan. 30 to Wed, Feb. 3, 2021. The price is available as the marine product is directly delivered from producing areas to traditional markets to remove the middle distribution process and drastically cut the shipping expenses. The event will take place for a day for each of the 32 traditional markets in 14 autonomous districts. The SMG added that the event aims at having citizens visit the traditional markets more often by offering good-quality products at low prices.

The SMG will hold the event while strictly adhering to the disinfection/prevention rules, including wearing a mask and social distancing, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The SMG also asked citizens to participate in complying with the disinfection regulations.

Free Parking Temporarily Allowed at Adjacent Roads of Traditional Markets to Improve Parking Difficulties

The SMG will also mitigate inconveniences of citizens who visit traditional markets for preparing for the Seollal holidays by allowing free parking and stopping for as long as two hours at additional 59 traditional markets except for 38 markets where they can freely park their vehicles for free all year round, for 10 days from Fri, Feb. 5 to Sun, Feb. 14, 2021. The list of traditional markets where temporary free parking is allowed is available on the SMG website (www.seoul.go.kr).
