Opening of Second Phase of Line 9 Subway

Date March 27, 2015 Venue Waiting Room at 9 Subway, Sport Complex Station

Tomorrow, the second phase of Subway Line 9 will finally begin operation. It has been 6 years and 10 months since the groundbreaking was conducted in June 2008. We now have a 30-minute trip between Gangseo and the Songpa area.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all local citizens for their understanding and cooperation over this time. I also would like to give my appreciation to all the construction staff who have dedicated themselves to the safety and high quality of this project.

If we have the third phase open by 2018, from Sport Complex to Veterans Hospital, we will have a fast penetration time from the East to the West. I believe that this will contribute to a balanced development, transportation welfare, and traffic enhancement.

Today is a very meaningful day; however, the staff of the Seoul Metropolitan Government and I feel a grave responsibility. What if the congested subway in the morning rush hour gets worse after the opening of the second phase of Line 9? I would like to say sorry to all citizens for their inconvenience at Line 9 during the rush hour times. I will not make any excuses; I am truly and deeply sorry about that. I am feeling a great sense of responsibility, especially when I think those who are on the way to work and school during the rush hours.

As Seoul Mayor, I am fully aware of what caused this inconvenience. I will pull all of my efforts into coming up with practical measures to address this issue. In addition, I will focus more on safety issues for all citizens.

Even if we work hard, I believe there will be room for improvement, as we are not perfect. We therefore decided to introduce the free rapid bus in Yeouido in Gangseo, and we will do our best to increase the number of vehicles.

I would like to ask you to participate in this initiative, in particular by using buses and taking flexible working hours. By encouraging all ten million citizens living in Seoul to show your wisdom, cooperation, and participation, we are going to solve this issue wisely.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will do its best to ease the serious congestion in Line 9. Things are tough; however, we are working together. I think that nothing can prevent our progress. Thank you.
