    Dongguk University Nestled on a hill and linked to Namsan mountain, Dongguk University is perhaps one of the hidden gems of Seoul. This is made more prominent during the Lotus Lantern Festival in celebration of Buddha’s birthday. Unlike missionary schools, Dongguk University is one of the rare universities with Buddhism as its religious affiliation. Indeed, this Buddhist influence can be seen in the architecture – which includes a temple within their campus compound. Aside from being a serene place, visitors will be able to learn more about Dongguk University’s culture by walking through the campus and learning more about the university’s mascot (elephants) which are centrally located. It’s proximity to cheap (and good) food, which is less crowded as compared to the traditional Hongdae / Sinchon area is also a definite plus! Gwanghwamun Square The other venue that is transformed during Buddha’s birthday is the celebratory procession held in Gwanghwamun Square. The square, home to the statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun Sin, and known for its prelude to the famed Gyeongbukgung Palace, takes a surprising twist during the month of May.
