During the upcoming holiday season (Dec. 20 to Jan 3.), the entire wall of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) designed by Zaha Hadid, the renowned architect, will become a huge venue for excitement. When the sun is down and the city grows dark, the curved silver wall, the signature of the DDP, will show fantastic combination of light, moving images and music.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Design Foundation announced that, this year, they will start “DDP Light,” a winter lighting festival, showing media-facade with various content using the outer surface of the DDP building as a huge screen. Media-facade is a type of media art projecting video images of various contents on an external surface of a building.
Seoul is planning to make the festival into a signature night-time tourist attraction such as “Vivid Sydney” in Australia which attracts a lot of tourists at the end of May, wintertime of the country. Many other cities around the world are holding similar light festivals at late fall or in the winter which is usually slow season for tourism.
Theme of the first year of DDP Light is “SEOUL HAEMONG” showing visual content of history, present and future of Seoul and Dongdaemun (East gate of the old city of Seoul). Refik Anadol, the World’s renowned media designer from Turkey, will be the main designer.
Pictures of Seoul and Dongdaemun showing their history and photos taken by citizens will be collected, interpreted and re-combined by AI and machine learning into lights and images. The artwork will be about stories of people collected by citizens’ voluntary participation.
To promote the festival, the Seoul Metropolitan government will hold an event at Conference House Dalgaebi at 11:00 on December 7 with the main designer Refik Anadol.
