SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, October 25, 2021 – Seoul will become a venue where the world’s cities can share practical efforts to cope with the climate crisis in a situation that the role of cities is increasingly important in tackling climate change while achieving sustainable development.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will host the Seoul Mayors’ Forum on Climate Change 2021 (SMFCC 2021) online for two days from October 26 to 27 to lead international cooperation in taking action against climate change through low-carbon development initiatives.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasized in its Working Group I Contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report released in August that global warming is accelerating and climate change is becoming widespread and rapidly intensifying due to human activities.

Since the Kyoto Protocol ends and the implementation of the Paris Agreement that seeks a decarbonized global society by 2050 begins this year, Seoul aims to actively respond to the climate crisis and strengthen its willingness to practice climate action with other cities around the world to achieve carbon neutrality.

15 cities from 14 countries leading climate action will join the SMFCC 2021 to promote global cities’ carbon neutrality and low-carbon development and share each city’s best practices for greenhouse gas reduction.

The SMFCC was first held in 2016 and marks its fourth anniversary this year. The SMFCC 2021 will take place under the theme of “Achieving Carbon Neutrality to Address Climate Emergency.”

On October 26, the first day of the forum, the opening ceremony and the plenary session about Cities Race to Zero” will be held. And on October 27, speakers and panelists will discuss ways to reduce greenhouse gas and efforts to cope with climate change in buildings, resource circulation, citizen participation, transportation, and climate finance during the thematic sessions.

Detailed information on programs, speakers, pre-events, and real-time quiz event can be found on the SMFCC 2021 website (https://smfcc.kr/).

“Having COP26 (2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference) ahead, each country is expected to declare their upgraded goal of greenhouse gas reduction. In this circumstance, it is meaningful to have SMFCC 2021 in Seoul,” said Yoo Yeon-sik, Deputy Mayor for Climate & Environment at the Seoul Metropolitan Government. “I hope this forum will be a good opportunity for cities to make strengthened solidarity and cooperation for solving climate crisis problems that require comprehensive solutions.”
