SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, June 24, 2019 — The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced to designate a “street of food truck” in Namdaemun Market for international tourists as well as citizens. It is an attempt to make the oldest and largest conventional market in Seoul one of the most popular night attractions where people can enjoy shopping and eating at the same time.

The street of food truck is created within the “Namdaemun 3GO Night Market,” a 130m-long market stretching from Mesa Shopping Mall to Samik Fashion Town that will be open from June 26 to the end of October. Visitors are able to enjoy dishes from all over the world from a total of 13 food trucks from 8 p.m. to midnight every day. They will also have a chance to enjoy outdoor performances and buy handicrafts and products of social enterprises.

Since 2017, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has designated the streets of food truck at various distinctive places so to provide citizens with something to enjoy while offering food truck operators with stable venues to sell their foods. Given that most of food trucks are run by young people, this scheme is committed to helping the youth get jobs.

The food trucks were run near Gangnam Station and Doksan Station, and Mapo Agriculture and Fishery Market in 2017, and near Inwang Market and the area the Hangang River and Tancheon Stream meet in 2018.

For this year, the city government selected Namdaemun Market as well as the area the Hangang River and Tancheon Stream meet again as the sites for operating food trucks via each autonomous district’s public competition.

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, these two places were selected because they are easily accessible by public transportation and have a large floating population and enough spaces for operating several food trucks. Also, it is possible in there to operate food trucks in a regular and long-term period, rather than a temporary operation.

Particularly the Namdaemun Market, already visited by many foreign visitors as well as citizens, is expected to become more popular tourist destinations because of the food trucks. It is also expected to attract young people and family visitors.

In a bid to promote food truck business, the Seoul Metropolitan Government provides educational programs about how to open a food truck and customized consulting services and subsidizes those who complete its educational program with startup funding.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said, “The designation of the street of food truck is for the city government and the autonomous districts to work together in order to boost local culture and economy at the same time. We plan to provide various support to make it a representative night attraction in each district.
