SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, May 27, 2019 — The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will create two solar landmarks “Solar Square” and “Solar Road” in the World Cup Park and Ttukseom Hangang Park respectively by October so that citizens are allowed to feel more familiar with the solar energy. Such an attempt is part of the city government’s master plan “2022 Solar City, Seoul,” which focuses on producing up to 1 GW of solar energy by 2022.
According to the plan, “Solar Square” with 19 meters in diameter will be created at the World Cup Park. A total of 1,088 “solar blocks” will be installed along the rim of the circle and 2,453 “LED blocks” will be done inside the circle. The solar blocks produce electricity during the day, and the LED blocks send out various contents of images after sunset.
Since it is the first attempt in Korea to produce images by using solar energy, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will actively listen to experts’ and related departments’ opinions in order to implement the plan without any problem. Solar blocks will generate 31.4 kWh of electricity a day, while LED image content will consume 24.5 kWh a day.
The World Cup Park is located near the World Cup Stadium, the Haneul Park and the Oil Tank Culture Park, which makes people easily visit the park. And, it is expected to become a landmark of new renewable energy with the Seoul Energy Dream Center, Korea’s first energy-independent public building in the park.
Another solar landmark is “Solar Road,” a 250-meter-long bike road around the waterfront stage at the Ttukseom Hangang Park. Solar and LED blocks are installed along the road, allowing the citizens to enjoy their riding in the riverside park with a fine view. A total of 348 solar blocks will be laid in the middle of the road, and 584 LED blocks along the bike road line.
Solar Road’s solar blocks produce 10kWh of electricity a day, and LED blocks consume 7kWh of electricity a day. When the sun goes down, LED lights are turned on by solar power, along which people can ride a bicycle safely. In addition, a new renewable energy-themed park will be created at the Ttukseom Hangang Park that features solar shadow canopies, a solar charging station for electric vehicles and solar symbolic sculptures as a place where people are able to comprehensively experience the solar energy.
A solar LED block has 15 times stronger in terms of the flexural strength than the Korean Standards (45 Mpa) and two times higher in the skid resistance (42 BPN). It is also dustproof and waterproof certified by IP68. Its solar modules have a power generation efficiency of 16.41 percent.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to start the construction of the two landmarks in mid-June and to complete them in this coming October. It will reflect opinions from experts and bike club members from the design stage and promote the plan through social networking sites and events.
After the two places open, their power generation capacity and power efficiency will be monitored in order to use them as basic data for building solar roads. If this happens, it will be applied to many fields such as charging electric vehicles and establishing a smart road and a smart city.
