  • Seoul to create eight more “modular parks” with trees that provide shade over concrete grounds

  • Environment & Energy news SMG 1554
The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is planning to create modular parks that can be easily installed in various places in eight locations (i.e. Gangnam Station, Seoul Forest Station, Bangbae Café Street, etc.) by the first half of this year to improve the city’s landscape and reduce particulate matter levels.

This modular park project is about creating small spaces for modular parks in empty lots on the side of the road, paved areas, etc. by assembling multiple mobile planters (portable water foundations) and resting facilities. It is a fast and easy way to create green shelters on the surfaces paved with concrete or asphalt, and empty lots where it is difficult to secure a depth of soil to plant trees in without the ground work.

The completed moving parks can be temporarily relocated to somewhere else using a crane or a forklift when there are events to be held. The planters can be also rearranged to suit characteristics of each location to create unique spaces.

Meanwhile, the SMG started creating modular parks in 2019. It created modular parks in ten locations in 2019, and six locations in 2020. Continuing this year, the SMG selected eight locations where there is a lack of green areas and shade such as a square in front of a subway station, spaces around residential areas, and more.

This year, the SMG plans to plant tall trees that can cast greater shades, and increase the number of trees in general in comparison to the last year. Against infectious diseases such as COVID-19, the SMG will also newly introduce social distancing benches (1-person benches) in the mobile planters so that citizens can enjoy a break while complying with the disease control and prevention guidelines.
