    SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, June 4, 2021 – The Seoul Metropolitan Government will hold a celebration wishing for a successful hosting of the Seoul Biennale of Architecture & Urbanism 2021 at 5 p.m. on June 8 (KST), 100 days ahead of the opening.

    The Seoul Biennale of Architecture & Urbanism 2021, first held in 2017 as an international event themed with cities and architecture, will celebrate its third anniversary this year.

    Titled “Crossroads Building the Resilient City,” the biennale will take place at various locations across Seoul, including Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture, and Sewoon Plaza, over the course of 46 days from September 16 through October 31.

    Around 30 guests, including the Mayor of Seoul, the Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, and ambassadors from 10 countries are expected to attend the celebration event on June 8.

    During the first part of the event, the Mayor of Seoul will deliver his commemorative speech and the Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council will make a congratulatory speech, which will be followed by a presentation on the theme of the biennale by Dominique Perrault, General Director of the Seoul Biennale of Architecture & Urbanism 2021.

    After Perrault’s presentation, representatives of Seoul will exchange letters of intent with six participating countries – France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Australia, and the United Kingdom, pledging for continuous cultural exchanges.

    The unveiling ceremony of “Windrose,” the symbolic sculpture of the biennale, will be followed at the second part of the celebration event.

    In celebration of 100 days to go before the Seoul Biennale of Architecture & Urbanism 2021, a parade featuring advertising balloons will start at 11 a.m. from near Seoul City Hall, where the Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture is located, pass by DDP and Sewoon Plaza, the two main exhibition venues.

    Opening on September 16, the Seoul Biennale of Architecture & Urbanism 2021 will display about 130 urban projects participated by 41 universities and 190 artists.

    Visitors are allowed to enjoy diverse exhibitions at DDP: the “Thematic” exhibition will display the works of participating artists, the “Cities” exhibition will present pending issues and public projects in global cities, and the “Global Studios” exhibition will offer a space for research findings from 41 domestic and foreign architectural universities.

    The Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture will introduce public projects that show the direction of the urban policies of Seoul and the world’s cities. In the “Field Project” to be held at Sewoon Plaza, literary writers and architects will share their personal experiences in the city together.

    “The Seoul Biennale of Architecture &Urbanism 2021 is the first international architectural event to be held amid the COVID-19 pandemic and will serve as the opportunity to establish Seoul’s status as a center of international urban architecture and cultural exchange,” said Oh Se-hoon, Mayor of Seoul.”I hope that the biennale will become a platform of communication for the world’s cities to explore the future in order to give resilience to cities that the pandemic has stagnated.”
