Starting May, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will be strengthening its pilot operation of the “separate recycling system” that necessitates separating plastic bags and transparent plastic beverage and water bottles when disposing of recyclable items.
From detached houses and shopping areas, plastic bags and transparent plastic bottles shall be disposed for recycling on Thursdays in different bags. Other recyclable items shall be disposed for recycling on days other than Thursdays.
For apartments (condominiums), transparent plastic beverage and water bottles will no longer be collected under the general plastic category, but disposed in a separate collection box.
As the market for recycled items has become unstable following the increase of recycled waste due to the rise in the use of disposable items and parcel/food delivery services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the overlapping circumstances of oil price plummets and embargoes, the SMG will be encouraging active participation of citizens in the separate recycling of plastic bags and transparent plastic bottles.
