SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, November 19, 2020 — Drivers find it much easier to use public parking lots in Seoul. A new parking service using the automated payment system has been opened in the city so that drivers do not need to stop or show their transportation cards to pay the parking fee anymore.

With the fourth industrial revolution technologies, the Seoul Metropolitan Government had test-run “wallet-free parking lots” at eight public parking lots since November 2019. After the pilot operation, the system was officially introduced to 113 public parking lots throughout the city.

At the wallet-free parking lots, drivers do not need to contact machines or people while making a more convenient payment. It contributes to radically reducing the risk of virus infection. Once drivers register the car plate number and payment method in advance via the green payment system (http://oksign.seoul.go.kr), their plate numbers can be quickly and automatically recognized at the parking lot, and the parking fee can be rapidly and automatically charged, which can significantly reduce the waiting time of parking in and out.

With this new measure, the disabled and persons of national merit also do not have to show proof document every time to get the discount. To get the transfer discount when using public transportation, one can tag the cards to the pre-payment machine and confirm it.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will provide a discount for the citizens who use the wallet-free parking lot until June 2021 with up to 10% (3% for regular membership, 10% for hourly parking fee).

The data collected at the wallet-free parking system will be utilized to provide real-time parking information for citizens via the Seoul Parking Information app. It is expected that the system will enable scientific management based on big data by using the data for tailored parking service, including the supply/demand management of parking lots.

Seoul has a plan to utilize this system to provide the necessary service to check and book the parking spots in advance. As it enables drivers to find parking availability in advance, the wandering time in the parking lots will significantly be reduced. It can also result in an eco-friendly effect by reducing vehicle emissions.

Hwang Bo-yeon, Deputy Mayor for City Transportation, said, “The wallet-free parking system can prevent unnecessary contact at a time when the risk of COVID-19 infection is spreading. Thanks to the automated payment, drivers can enjoy a quick billing process without waiting. With this radically improved public parking lot service for citizens’ safety and convenience, it is also expected that more citizens would pay attention to the program and make better use of it.”
