  • Seoul requires new large buildings to use solar energy

    SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, March 28, 2018 — The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will require construction companies in Seoul to build a new large building that 16 percent of its total energy use must be supplied through green energy, of which its majority must be produced through solar energy.

    This applies to environmental impact assessment targets such as new construction buildings with over total area of 100,000 square meters and redevelopment or reconstructions businesses with over 90,000 square meters and below 300,000 square meters.

    This is part of the revised “Environmental Impact Assessment Items and Standard for Construction and Maintenance business (redevelopment and reconstruction).” It will come into effect on July 1, 2018.

    It is an effort made to boost the rate of energy independence and contribute to the air quality reform. Last year in response to the global energy crisis, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced “2022 Solar City, Seoul” where 1GW solar power would be provided by 2022.

    The city government has made continuous efforts to foster an eco-friendly urban environment based on the environmental impact assessment. For example, implementation of green energy, high efficient lighting, standby power supply, and building energy management system (BEMS) have become requirements. In particular, green energy installation rate has been lifted from 15 to 16 percent, and high-efficient lighting increased from 90 to 100 percent.

    If more than 12 percent of renewable energy is secured, then group energy and energy storage system (ESS) can be substituted up to 4 percent as renewable energy. In addition, high-efficient lighting such as LEDs should be used 100 percent for lighting equipment in order to reduce the use of lighting power. Further, over 70 percent of standby power supply has to be installed to prevent the waste of power generated from unused electricity products.

    Also, the building energy management system helps to increase energy management efficiency by collecting and analyzing various information, such as the amount of use and consumption per energy source. Also, in an effort to improve air quality it is required to use over 70 percent of eco-friendly construction machines within construction sites as well as installing eco-friendly boilers, and low NO-x burners.

    Further, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has made steadfast efforts in establishing parking divisions and infrastructure in response to increased eco-friendly vehicles as well as setting up rules for electric vehicle charging stations.
