  • Seoul Metropolitan Library Triples Number of E-books and Audiobooks for Web and Mobile

  • Culture & Tourism news SMG 1502

The Seoul Metropolitan Library has updated 18,000 types of online content so that users can check out bestsellers and newly published books on their mobile phone or PC without having to come to the library due to the prolonged COVID-19 epidemic. Users can view them on the website of the Seoul Metropolitan Library starting on Jan. 11, 2021.

The Seoul Metropolitan Library announced that it has almost tripled the number of online content, added to the existing 10,000+ types of content that are already being provided. As the number of e-book check-outs of the users of the Seoul Metropolitan Library more than doubled compared to the previous year as they spend long hours at home due to COVID-19, the Library expanded the amount of content that can be enjoyed by the users online.

18,000 types of content comprise 15,000 Korean and foreign e-books including newly published books and 3,000 audiobooks that are read by professional dubbing artists. In particular, all 18,000 books are “subscription-type” content without the limit of the number of borrowers. You do not have to make a reservation or wait, and instead use any popular books anytime and anywhere you want. This will greatly address the inconvenience of users who could not immediately borrow the books they want to read due to a shortage of e-books and the dramatic rise of the number of e-book users.

The Seoul Metropolitan Library will continue updating new and popular e-books by early May 2024 so that citizens can use the subscription-type online content even after the COVID-19 situation. In the long term, the e-book page and viewer app of the Seoul Metropolitan Library will be repaired to be reorganized into the “Seoul Metropolitan Library Online Content Platform” with better accessibility and convenience.

You can borrow up to five e-books/audiobooks (subscription-type). You should sign-in on the website or the mobile app of the Seoul Metropolitan Library, and click on the Search menu → “E-books/Audiobooks” → “Subscription-type” to look up the content.

To borrow the online content, you must have a membership to the Seoul Metropolitan Library. If you don’t have the membership card, you should have it issued after you sign up on its official website (lib.seoul.go.kr). As of Mon, Jan. 11, the Seoul Metropolitan Library is temporarily closed following the disinfection regulation of the Seoul Metropolitan Government related to the spread of COVID-19, so it is recommended for you to have your membership card issued online.

Any Korean whose registered address is in Seoul can have his or her membership card issued on the website of the Seoul Metropolitan Library. If you are living in another city or province but attending a Seoul-based school/university or company, you can apply for the issuance of the membership card by submitting the documentary evidence of your working or studying status and through the permission of the person in charge. More information on the issuance of an online membership card is available on the website of the Seoul Metropolitan Library (https://lib.seoul.go.kr/memberJoin/onlineMembership).
