SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, January 12, 2021 — The Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul National University Hospital(SNUH) will set up a “Seoul Disaster Hospital” for severe COVID-19 patients on 19,720㎡ of the site of a general medical facility in Wonji-dong, Seocho-gu, in order to secure dedicated beds and expedite treatment. At the latest, It will complete installation at the end of March and start operation immediately.

There will be 48 modular beds for serious COVID-19 patients with negative pressure facilities. If the number of serious patients decreases depending on the situation, it can be switched to COVID-19 general beds (96 units).

In some cases, temporary beds have been installed on idle sites in hospitals, but it is the first attempt to install beds exclusively for COVID-19 treatment on separate sites.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will temporarily provide free land for the installation of temporary hospitals, and SNUH will be responsible for costs and medical staff. The site in Wonji- dong, Seocho-gu, where the Seoul Disaster Hospital will be built, is where the relocation of the National Medical Center was originally discussed. It is expected to be promoted quickly as it has already been designated as a land for a comprehensive medical facility.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 12th (Tuesday) that Acting Mayor Seo Jung- hyup and SNUH President Kim Yon-Su will sign a business agreement to establish the Seoul Disaster Hospital at the video conference room on the 6th floor of Seoul City Hall.

The two agencies have continued to cooperate in securing beds and treating patients since December through the “Seoul Disaster and Medical Council”, a public-private governance for a rapid infection response system, and the agreement is expected to strengthen dedicated beds and intensive treatment for severe patients.

Acting Seoul Mayor Seo Jung-hyup said, “Today is a very meaningful day for the public and private sectors to join hands to open a new path to public health. The Seoul Metropolitan Government will provide free land as well as completely prepare for a crisis that may occur at any time.”
