  • Seoul Launches Citywide Window Ventilation Campaign to Encourage Ventilating for +10 Min. Every Hour

  • Welfare, Health & Security News SMG 53950

The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is launching a citywide window ventilation campaign to encourage citizens to open windows and improve indoor air quality in their daily life.

This campaign aims to emphasize the importance of active ventilation to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as 30% of confirmed cases in Seoul in the last four months have occurred in facilities with insufficient ventilation.

Accordingly, the SMG announced its Seoul-type guidance for ventilating in daily life, and is conducting the citywide campaign along with extending level 2 social distancing for three weeks.

The campaign encourages citizens to open doors and windows at all times, if possible—provided that there are no external factors of inconvenience, such as noise. Facilities that cannot leave their doors and windows open at all times are recommended to ventilate for 10 minutes every hour. Windowless and basement facilities are recommended to ventilate by actively operating ventilation fans and opening windows one-third of the way when using AC.

Moreover, indoor sports facilities with many occurrences of respiratory droplets are instructed to increase the frequency of indoor air ventilation by opening all windows for at least 15 minutes immediately before and after business operations. Even though there are no separate rules regarding private residences, citizens are recommended to regularly ventilate their homes since household members engage in frequent conversations without wearing masks.

Along with the extension of the special disease control and prevention week, this citywide ventilation campaign encourages citizen participation and aims to minimize the risk of infection in confined facilities, which pose the largest risk as a space for group infection, and put an end to the nationwide spread of COVID-19.
