Seoul’s government announced a plan to remap the city’s future.
The goal is to make the South Korean capital world’s top 5 cities by 2030.
Our Kim Yeon-seung has the details.

Seoul city mayor Oh Se-hoon envisions that in less than 10 years, the city will be ranked among the top five in the world.

“Only a preemptive and forward-looking vision can guarantee a clear future for Seoul city.”

And to reach that goal, the city is going to start by harnessing the “Seoul dream”.

“Before, there were many ways to succeed as long as you worked hard for it, like a true rags to riches story. But now that seems difficult.”

First, Seoul city will aim to ensure equal opportunities for education with Seoul Learn, an online educational platform for underprivileged students.
Here, they can readily access school courses and test prep classes.
The city will also widen employment and start ups for not only young people but also for those over 50, by ramping up mentoring services, building employment schools, and loosening business regulations.
The plan also looks to turn Yeouido Island into Asia’s financial hub and attract some 250 overseas finance firms.
Seoul city from next year will kick off a grand landmark festival called the Seoul Festa, complete with K-pop concerts.
This will feed into the city’s goal of attracting 20 million tourists a year.
Viewers who were watching the event live on Youtube on Wednesday had the chance to ask the mayor directly about the plan. Their questions were read out by the planning director.

“Do you have a specific plan on how to secure the large budget needed for this plan?”

“Property taxes have doubled over the past three years due to the rise in real estate prices. So if we take the natural increase in tax revenue and restructure some expenditures, we can actualize this plan with a manageable budget.”

Seoul also plans to foster the K-beauty industry with the aim of leading the world’s cosmetic trends, and it is looking at incorporating cutting-edge AI to improve healthcare and security systems.
