  • Seoul Holds “UIA Round Table Asia-Pacific” via 3D Virtual Meeting

  • International Relations News SMG 415

The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) will be holding the 8th UIA (Union of International Associations) Round Table Asia-Pacific from Thursday, September 17 to Friday, September 18 at the newly developed “3D Virtual Space Seoul.”

Celebrating the 8th anniversary, the UIA Round Table Asia-Pacific is one of the representative global events in which 150 figures related to the Union of International Associations from 23 countries participate. It is an important event where major associations and societies, convention bureaus (organizations to invite international conferences), convention centers and more in the Asia-Pacific region partake to discuss the ways to develop international associations and societies and build a global network.

After succeeding in the attraction of the 8th UIA Round Table Asia-Pacific in February, the SMG has transformed the meeting that it has prepared into an “untact (or non-face-to-face)” form considering the COVID-19 situation, completing the development of the “Virtual Meeting in Seoul,” the 3D VR meeting platform with Seoul as the background. It is the world’s first virtual platform that advertises the city itself.

On the “3D Virtual Meeting Platform,” you can visit Seoul with a single click as five major attractions are reborn into 360-degree-angle 3D international conference halls: Changdeokgung Palace; Sebitseom Island; Seoul Botanic Park; DDP Rooftop Garden; and N Seoul Tower. All participants from 23 countries around the world can take part in programs in a non-face-to-face way, such as presentations, lectures, and networking, as they can feel as if they actually visited Seoul.

If you enter the conference hall in “Changdeokgung Palace,” which is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage, you can sit in to watch main programs, such as the keynote speech and lectures. At “Sebitseom Island,” discussion sessions will be taking place against the background of Hangang River. At the networking lounge prepared in “Seoul Botanic Park,” participants from around the globe can communicate in real-time through (video) chatting and voice messages. You can also vividly enjoy Seoul tourism programs, such as the rickshaw tour and cooking class, through VR videos.

The SMG has plans to go beyond an untact way of communication, such as webinar — a compound of “web” and “seminar” — and 1:1 online meeting using the video meeting system, and propose the new possibility of the MICE industry in the post-coronavirus age by adding the strategy of the “city marketing.”

The SMG and the Seoul Tourism Foundation will open the 3D virtual meeting platform that they developed so that it can be used for online events in the MICE industry.

By doing this, it is expected to produce double positive effects: a cost-saving effect for private companies in developing 3D virtual spaces and an effect to advertise Seoul as a representative city of the MICE industry. The SMG also expects to keep its reputation as a third-ranked city in the world as a host of international conferences.
