2015 Launch Ceremony for Women Safety Scout
Date March 5th, 2015 | Venue Multi-purpose Auditorium, Seoul City Hall
It is a great pleasure to be here today. I am the mayor of Seoul, Park Won-soon. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations and gratitude to all of you for being selected as members of the Women’s Safety Scout.
The Women’s Safety Scout is a project planned to prevent crimes aimed at women, which are becoming more severe. The scout has helped a number of women to get home safely in more than 100 thousand cases. Your activities significantly contributed to preventing nighttime crimes aimed at women, and the achievements have been reported in the media many times.
However, crimes aimed at women still occur regardless of time and place; it is not easy for women to shake off the sense of insecurity and fear. Still, I think we have a great deal of relief thanks to you. Do you agree? I myself have participated in the service as a scout member, and have escorted women and patrolled as well. Through the experience, I was able to understand how hard you work and how much pride you must take in having kept citizens safe. The Seoul Metropolitan Government will continue to make every effort to keep citizens safe. In particular, we will do our best to create an environment where you can work with no difficulties.
Do you know what day it is on March 8th? It is the International Women’s Day. This morning, the Seoul Government announced new policies for women to strengthen our policies for women. The key point was to use more women’s’ power to change our society for the better. Therefore, we are planning to empower various communities with women at the center by implementing projects such as national and public daycare centers, daycare centers for seniors, home cooked meal projects, and cooperatives for after-school education operated by women, and we will lead in a new social economy that focuses on our capacity to change Seoul with women’s power, recognizing the economic power of women. How does that sound to you?
Seoul would like to move forward to become a city where women live in security and safety, where women contribute as the cornerstones of the city, and where everybody can be happy together. Please join us. Thank you very much.
