SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, May 28, 2021 – For the first time in Korea, Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) uses metaverse, a virtual 3D space, to promote the city’s promising startups.

On ZEPETO, a global metaverse platform with over 200 million users worldwide, SMG launches Seoul Startup Hub World today.

Inside the Seoul Startup Hub World, Seoul’s 64 excellent startups and an exhibition hall welcome visitors. The SMG’s other facilities for startups, such as personal media studios, conference halls where IR meetings are held, and offices, are embodied in the virtual space, too. Any users of ZEPETO can look around the Seoul Startup Hub World and interact with other users through their avatars.

The SMG aims to break from the conventional promotion methods—offline presentations or websites—and maximize the advertising effects by using the metaverse, which is gaining traction across the industry.

As a token of such efforts, the Seoul city government plans to hold a tour program introducing its Startup Hub World on June 9. Representatives of startups in Chang-dong Startup Hub, venture capitalists, and business partners will introduce the virtual space by joining the program with their avatars. In addition, from June 9 to 11, they provide coins to visitors who have completed missions as an opening event. Visitors can use the coins in ZEPETO.

In a rapidly changing IT business environment such as the metaverse platform, the SMG strives to diversify its support for companies. The city recently opened Seoul Startup Hub in Chang-dong, which specializes in new media marketing encompassing content creation and live commerce.

The Chang-dong Hub kickstarted its operation this month. Currently, 12 companies moved into the building.

Park Dae-woo, Director General of Economy & Employment Planning Bureau, said, “Due to the lengthy pandemic, online support became a necessary way to nurture businesses. For more startups to grow, the SMG will reinforce our support programs by using various new media. We will spare no effort to make the city’s startup ecosystem widely known through metaverse platforms.”
