SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, July 24, 2018 – In the press conference held on July 19, the Seoul Energy Corporation announced that it will establish a representative model f “Smart Energy City” in the Magok neighborhood of Seoul to shift an urban energy paradigm in cooperation with Korea’s major energy companies, such as GS E&C, LG Electronics, and GS Power.
“Smart Energy City” is a new urban development model that uses advanced information and communication technology (ICT) to increase the use of eco-friendly energies and also to improve the quality of life of citizens. In particular, it is considered as the best way to tackle urban energy-related problems including fine dusts and climate change since it utilizes renewable energies and technologies of the fourth industrial revolution.
As the eco-friendly urban construction projects are gradually expanding globally, for instance, in the United States, Europe, and Japan, the Seoul Energy Corporation has also made various preparations for implementing the Smart Energy City project from early this year.
It declared during the press conference that it will develop five models of Smart Energy City – Smart Energy Home, Smart Energy Building, Smart Energy Community, Smart Energy Town and Smart Energy Heat Grid (district heating) – to transform Seoul into a safe and eco-friendly energy city for the future.
Once these five models of Smart Energy City are successfully developed, it is expected to achieve 30 percent of power self-sufficiency rate in the area of Magok by 2022, and reduce 190 tons of fine dust annually and also 180,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
