The population of Seoul has fallen below 10 million for the first time in 32 years, and that’s in part because the pandemic forced many foreign residents to leave. The city government says the population fell by around 90,000, and is now at 9.91 million people. Seoul’s population started to slowly decline after 1992, following decades of extreme growth. In terms of age, the data show the city’s biggest cohort are from 25 to 29. But the stats also reflect South Korea’s aging population. The number of children four years and younger declined by around 10 percent, while people aged 85 to 89 increased by more than 11 percent.
