Hello, I am Deng jing from China.
Here I go!

Q1. Why did you decide to come to Seoul?
I initially became interested in Korea through a chance encounter.
My hometown is Xinjiang, a region in northwest China.
One day, a Korean person moved to the apartment below mine.
That’s when I first learned about Korean culture and heard Korean language being spoken.
I started learning Korean and applied for a Korean language program in Korea. I was then accepted and so here I am.

Q2. What’s your impression of Seoul?
Before, I only knew about Korea through TV dramas.
Once I got here, I started to learn about many fun and interesting aspects about Korea.
The people are very hospitable and the country has excellent services and amenities.
It certainly enables one to live a convenient life.

Q3. Please tell us how you feel about participating in the Seoul challengers.
Wow! I was selected for Seoul Challenge!
Thank you, everyone. Without your help, I would not have made it.
I’m very excited to try lots of delicious Korean food.

Hello, I’m Deng jing from China.
Hello guys. Today, I’m going to learn how to make traditional Korean rice cake at Namsangol Hanok Village. Okay, let’s do it! Wish me luck.

Hello. Hello. Hello.
We are going to make traditional Korean rice cake today.
Kkotsanbyeong means that rice cake is as pretty as flowers.
Now, let’s make some kkotsanbyeong.

First of all, you need to wear gloves.
It’s made of the same kind of rice we eat every day. The rice is soaked in water and steamed in a caldron. Then, it is pounded in a mortar.
It’s hot. It’s very hot. What we are going to do now is, add color using dried strawberry and pumpkin powders.
It’s amazing.
What color rice cake do you want to make? I want to make a red one. Red. Yes, I will make a red one!
Okay, red. Wow. I’ll make a yellow one.

First of all, I really appreciate you guys giving me such a great chance to eat delicious traditional Korean dishes through Seoul Challengers.
I can’t wait anymore. Let’s go right now!
Wow. These dishes, in front of me, are called Korean table d’hote with beef.
The biggest benefit of Korean table d’hote is that you can enjoy a variety of side dishes.
Then, I will try soybean paste stew.
Soybean paste stew is one of the most traditional Korean dishes.
Oh, it’s hot.
Umm, it’s really delicious.
Wow~
I personally like steamed egg and I really love this restaurant’s steamed egg.
Let me taste it.
Umm.
This is grilled fish Korean people love. It’s called ‘Jogi’ in Korean.
Umm, delicious.
In fact, I really like Korean styled grilled fish. It’s aromatic.
It seems very fresh and has a very soft texture.
The next dish I would like to introduce to you is vegetable wraps and rice.
Put a piece of meat, some rice, kimchi which I like, and a little bit of hot pepper paste.
The important thing you have to remember when you eat vegetable wraps and rice in Korea is that you have to eat it one bite. Do not eat it in several bites.
So, I’ll eat it in one bite.
Umm, I ate all of the kimchi.
Side dishes are typically all-you-can-eat, so you can eat as much as you want. If you can eat a lot, Korean table d’hote would be perfect for you.
This is so convenient. Each table has a call bell, so you just press this bell if you need the waiter or waitress’ help.
I had a really good time here. Especially, I loved charcoal grilled beef.
I hope more foreigners visit Korea and enjoy traditional Korean cuisine.

Today we are going to visit Tongin Market, one of the most famous traditional markets in Seoul.
Let’s go in. This is going to be fun.

Ah, so first you can buy these brass coins called Yeopjeon to be used as money inside the market.
I had so much fun at the Tongin Market today.
I only spent 5,000 won and enjoyed such a great variety of food today.

Gireum tteokbokki, or oil rice cake, is the most famous dish at Tongin Market,
which is why we are going to try some today.
One serving of gireum tteokbokki, please.

I heard the gireum tteokbokki here is simply the best.
And, look! There’s chicken. My favorite!
This dumpling is huge. It has so much meat inside, too!

I heard Seoul has a number of traditional markets.
Tongin Market was special because you can purchase food with coins and all the food is really tasty.
I’m 100% satisfied.
Come on over to Tongin Market and enjoy all that it has to offer.

Ganjang Gejang(Soy Sauce Marinated Crab)

As you can see, it’s a lot of food!
I’m going to delve right into it.
I’m at a very famous Ganjang Gejang restaurant in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
Look at the crab.
It’s in season now!
Look! There’s so much meat. Do you see this?
Let me show you.
Do you see the orange-colored meat?
Squeeze it with your hands to see how meaty it is!
I will take a big bite now.

Now, I’m going to mix some rice with it.
It’s going to taste so good with rice.
Look how tasty it looks!

Now, I’m going for the spicy marinated Gejang(Crab)!
It’s spicy but I’m just going to use my hands!
Wow! Look at the size!
Here’s a great tip for Chinese tourists who eat Gejang in Korea.
This is the shell of the crab.
People mix rice in the shell to access the hidden meat inside the shell.
Check this out. Take the rice.
Then, mix it with the Gejang.
It’s so delicious that you’ll empty up an entire bowl before you even notice.

Korean people also love eating Gejang with dried seaweed.
The best thing in the world! I have to say.

If my friend visits Seoul in the future, I’m going to bring him/her here.

but it feels really exciting just to be here with everybody.

It’s so exciting because of the fireworks.
To see my kids experience the lights and the fireworks.
So it feels like a really magical evening.

Q. What was the most memorable challenge out of the 5 challenges?
Of all the things that we’ve done on this challenge,
I really enjoyed the Lotte Seoul Sky,
because I watched it being built for 5 years
and it was fun to actually be in there,
and be so high up. .

But I would also say that this evening is really, really memorable.
because we are leaving Seoul,
I think has it more memorable for me.
And has just reminded me that Seoul is a really special city.
Just full of things to do and places to make memories,

Q. How do you feel about completing the 5 challenges?
I just feel honored that we were able to do this and
to have fun experiencing things through my kids’ eyes.
