The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) has announced its 2021 Comprehensive Plan for Seoul Tourism Reformation comprising three-step SRT* strategies for Seoul tourism, which is facing the worst situation due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, to overcome the crisis and prepare for the tourism market of the new post-COVID-19 era.
* are three key points of the plan: Support (); Recovery (); Take-off ().
What is the most urgent is livelihood. The SMG will do its best to provide support by providing funds of KRW 10 billion in April and opening the Seoul Tourism Plaza.
The paradigm for the tourism content will also be shifted following the changed conditions of tourism in the COVID-19 era. In May, the city will develop travel courses to explore local areas by discovering hidden contents of villages and towns, instead of emphasizing travel overseas, as well as launch the travel program in which people can experience Donuimun Gate and Hanyangdoseong the Seoul City Wall in 4D using digital technologies, such as AR and VR. The existing tourism interpretation and docent will be transformed into contactless/online type.
The preemptive take-off will be supported so that Korean tourism can preoccupy the market after the COVID-19 pandemic. The eco-system for medical tourism, which has risen in popularity as a result of the pandemic, will be expanded as the field of wellness will be included for the cooperative institutions of medical tourism. The SMG will vitalize the special luxury tourism by cooperating with travel agencies and hotels and develop hybrid content development using Korean Wave (Hallyu).
As the SMG will invest a total of KRW 86 billion, it will continue to support the tourism industry, the field with fierce competition among cities around the world during the time to recover the lost daily life in the post-COVID-19 era.
