Opening of the Second Life Support Center for Senior Citizens

    Date: 10/7/2014
    Venue: Jongno-gu, Dong-eui Building

Thank you for coming to this important event. I would like to congratulate you on the opening of the Second Life Support Center for Senior Citizens for the baby-boomer generation.

The baby-boomer generation refers to those who were born from 1955 to 1963, when there was a relatively high birth rate following the Korean War. I am one of the baby-boomers. My parents had seven children, so I had to share the room with my father. Many families lived in similar circumstances. Those of the baby-boomer generation have led modern Korean history. You are the people who created the miracle of economic growth known as the Miracle on the Han River, and it was you who fought for our democratic society.

You were very important workers; however, with sudden retirement, you must have difficulties in figuring out how to live your second life, as so many of you have dedicated yourselves to taking care of your parents and children. We have a longer life expectancy now and we less work than before. You must be looking for worthy work, along with 1.5 million senior citizens in Seoul in the same situation. This is a new challenge we have never been experienced. Even before taking office, I kept this in mind and spent a lot of time planning the Happy Life Design Academy for senior citizens to live their second lives. After taking office, I created the Second Life Support Center for Senior Citizens. We now have the second support center. I have pledged to establish 25 percent more support centers. I believe it is a worthy investment.

We should not waste the precious experience and wisdom of senior citizens accumulated over the course of many years. The Second Life Support Center for Senior Citizens will help recycle that precious experience and wisdom. Among the centers, five will be constructed like a university campus. With spacious areas, senior citizens will design their lives, establish new companies, study humanities, and do their favorite activities. Starting in my second term, I put the Second Life Support Center over any other issue. I hope President Jo Gap-ryung and Chairman Kim Jung-tae will lead the center well, and I hope many senior citizens have a chance to study and have their best years in their second life. Let’s work together. Thank you.
