Mayor Park Won-soon received the BlueSky Award in Global Green and Low-carbon Field, an award that is given to the individual and the city that have contributed to low-carbon, green development, at the 7th International Low Carbon City Forum which was held in Shenzhen, China on the 29th (Thurs.).
The Shenzhen International Low Carbon City Forum has received the participation of over 5,500 people from 50 countries over the last six years, including government officials, experts, entrepreneurs, civic organizations and more. This year, the forum discussed international climate problems and green development since 2013 in order to share outcomes and promote practical collaboration. The Bluesky Award was established in 2017 by the “Organizing Committee of the BlueSky Award,” comprised of the city of Shenzhen and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in order to promote low-carbon, green growth and encourage sustainable development in the fields of energy and environment.
The city of Shenzhen explained that the BlueSky award was given to Mayor Park Won-soon in international recognition of the environmental policies of Seoul and his leadership. Seoul has seen the production and replacement of energy through its pioneering environment-friendly policies, such as “One Less Nuclear Power Plant” and “Solar City Seoul.” The city of Seoul has received several globally prestigious awards in the fields of climate and environment regarding low-carbon, green development, including the Climate Action Leadership Award and One Planet Challenge Award. However, this was the first time that Mayor Park Won-soon was given an award in the individual field.
In the video through which he delivered his reaction to receiving the award, Mayor Park Won-soon said, “I think this award is not for me, but rather for the residents of Seoul and the government officials working for the city of Seoul who have striven for the realization of a low-carbon, green city…Seoul is making efforts to reduce greenhouse gases through saving energy and producing eco-friendly energy, feeling the responsibility as an energy-consuming city. We will do our best to make a livable, sustainable city for the years to come.”
As Mayor Park Won-soon received the award, Seoul expects to be able to strengthen ties with China in the fields of energy and response to climate change.
