The Union internationale Archtiectes (UIA) is a UN-certified international architecture union (* cooperates with UNESCO, WHO, WTO). It was started in Lausanne, Switzerland in June 1948 and currently has its headquarters in Paris. As of 2015, there are 124 member nations, with Korea having joined in 1963. Currently, three organizations (KIRA, KIA, AIK) are working in UIA as the Federation of Institutes of Korean Architects (FIKA).
The UIA World Congress of Architecture is held once every three years and consists of the UIA general meeting, theme lectures, and a variety of exhibitions. Recently, the congress has been held in Berlin (2002), Istanbul (2005), Torino (2008), and Tokyo (2011) and will be held in Durban, South Africa in 2014. With the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s support, FIKA has succeeded in bringing the congress to Korea. Through the hosting of the UIA World Congress of Architecture in Seoul, Korea looks forward to entering the world market, building a global network, and upgrading its status in the architecture community.
