“Pedestrian Forest Path” on Sejong-daero, which has been newly revamped as a representative pedestrian street in Seoul that connects the city center with people, culture and natural greenery, is open to the public this spring.
In April, the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) completed the construction project for Pedestrian Forest Path on Sejong-daero with the objective of seamlessly connecting various parts of the Sejong-daero area with roadside pedestrian-friendly forest paths. The project was completed only nine months after the groundbreaking in July 2020.
By seamlessly connecting the 1.55-km-long Sejong-daero section’s Sejong-daero Intersection, Sungnyemun Gate and Seoul Station, the renewed road is already becoming a new attraction that is transforming the face of Seoul.
The SMG has been promoting its pedestrian-centered road reform policies to put focus on pedestrians by reducing roads for cars while expanding pedestrian-only paths and green traffic spaces.
For the first time, the SMG introduced the concept of urban roadside forest with trees, shrubs and flowers, going beyond the mere reduction of car lanes. Pedestrian Forest Path on Sejong-daero is significant in that it is steering Seoul to become a pedestrian-friendly city where the entire city is connected with green forest paths.
Through the completion of Pedestrian Forest Path on Sejong-daero, it is expected that it will become the representative walking path brand of Seoul that connects major sites on Sejong-daero, such as Gwanghwamun Square, Deoksugung Palace and Sungnyemun Gate, through walking paths while embracing culture, history and landscape, and integrating businesses, economy and citizens.
Meanwhile, in order to promote the completion of the construction of Pedestrian Forest Path on Sejong-daero, the SMG is hosting the “Spring Walk Along Pedestrian Forest Path on Sejong-daero” event for two weeks from May 3 to May 15, starting with the Online Walk Along Pedestrian Forest Path on Sejong-daero event.
Putting safety first in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be a blended meeting, integrating online and offline arrangements, including contactless events in which citizens can easily participate, such as “Online Walk” and “Photo Zone Tour” of Pedestrian Forest Path on Sejong-daero.
