[Anchor] Winter can be brutaly cold here in Korea, but if you can endure the bone-chilling temperatures, there are plenty of activities to enjoy one of which is ice skating in what has become a yearly tradition now. The heart of Seoul has been transformed into a grand outdoor skating rink. And best of all, it’s cheap enough for even those with the modest budgets to have a really great day out. Our Kim Bo-kyung went to check it out and filed this report.

[Reporter] For those who love ice skating, or if you’re just looking for a way to stay active this winter, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has turned some major attractions in the city into ice skating rinks.

“The Seoul Plaza Ice Skating Rink is located in front of City Hall, and it’s open until early February.
One hour of skating, including skate rental and helmet, costs less than one U.S. dollar.”

The rink opens at 10 AM. and closing time differs by the day.
Here people can enjoy other winter sports too, such as curling.

“So we are from Daegu. We came here, it’s my wife Lauren, we came here from Daegu with my friend Moon. This would be a good opportunity to come out and do curling like we watched in the Olympics when we were here a couple years ago, so I figured we’d give it a try and it’s awesome.”

There is another outdoor rink right in the middle of the Han River.
Nodeul Island was a popular place to enjoy the outdoors until the 1960s. Then there were multiple attempts to develop it, but those failed and it was forgotten.
But now half a century later, the city government has opened an ice skating rink, and so people are coming again.

“I came here with my friend. Although I didn’t know they had opened a skating rink on Nodeul Island after 50 years I am glad to know it’s here, and it’s great how lots of people can skate together. I think I’ll come here often.”

The skating rink on Nodeul Island is open until mid-February, and the price to skate for one hour is the same as Seoul Plaza.
Both skating rinks can close, however, if there are high levels of fine dust pollution, so make sure to check before you go.
