The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s (SMG) Fine Dust Research Institute will be operating its Mobile Air Quality Laboratory (Mobile Lab) that will run from the Seoul Research Institute of Public Health and Environment to roads throughout Seoul measuring particulate matter (PM) in real time.
Mobile Lab is a mobile air quality measuring system. It comprises two electric vehicles—measuring particulate and gaseous matters—with cutting-edge measuring devices. It not only measures and analyzes PM, but also the causative agents of PM. It is the nation’s first mobile measuring system that has such functions.
Mobile Lab can measure and analyze the concentration, ingredients and causative agents of PM by time and region per minute and second in real time so that it can trace the emission source of pollutants.
The SMG announced that it will measure the concentration and analyze the components of PM in nine autonomous districts (i.e. Gangnam-gu, Seocho-gu, Seongdong-gu, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Gangseo-gu, Dongjak-gu, Geumcheon-gu, Guro-gu, and Jung-gu) from January to March during PM control season. These are the regions where small and large businesses that emit air pollutants are concentrated. The SMG has plans to enhance the effect of season control by focusing on the analysis.
The SMG aims to use the results to find ways for strict management of high PM-concentrated areas and evaluate the reduction performance of institutions ordered to reduce PM emission during the PM control season. It is expected that the SMG could analyze the traits of Seoul-type PM as it can observe the physical and chemical traits of air pollutants through Mobile Lab in a timely manner (i.e. commuting hours, seasons, high PM concentration periods) and by space (i.e. residential/commercial, children protection zones, roadside). Mobile Lab is one of the projects that are pursued by the SMG’s Fine Dust Research Institute to secure the scientific foundation to solve the problems of PM in Seoul.
The Fine Dust Research Institute is executing research tasks focusing on the enhancement of precision of emission data, which is the basic data for particulate matter policies, through sharing particulate matter tasks and measuring data between relevant institutions. It will be conducting the countermeasures against particulate matter based on a precise scientific foundation by investigating the causative agents and generation process of PM in Seoul through reinforced monitoring.
