In order to successfully host the 2032 Seoul-Pyeongyang Summer Olympics, which was agreed upon by the two leaders during the inter-Korean declaration on September 19, 2018, directors of the city of Seoul and related departments and other experts gathered for the first time to suggest the vision of peace on the Korean peninsula that will be brought about when South Korea and North Korea co-host the Olympics.
Seoul held the “2032 Seoul-Pyeongyang Summer Olympics Co-hosting Support Forum” jointly with the Ministry of Unification, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee. Under the theme, “Seoul-Pyeongyang, a Dream of a Peaceful Future through Olympics,” the forum took place between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on November 26 at the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Chosun, Sogong-dong, Seoul.
At the forum, the meaning and vision of the joint hosting of the Olympics were suggested and the new aspects of the future that the co-hosting of the Olympics by South Korea and North Korea can bring about, such as vitalized exchanges between Seoul and Pyeongyang, were examined from diverse perspectives including sports, transportation, environment, and economy.
Seoul announced that “2032 Seoul-Pyeongyang Summer Olympics will be the key to lead us to a whole new path of peace and prosperity on the Korean peninsula,” and “we have to go through a number of procedures until the hosting of the Olympics but the most important thing is the ardent support and endorsement of our citizens.”
