The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is hosting Seoul Intangible Culture Festival 2021 for six days starting Mon, Oct. 11 to promote the artistry and craftsmanship of Seoul’s intangible cultural heritage holders.

First held in 2005, Seoul Intangible Culture Festival is a major event that showcases and promotes Seoul’s traditions and culture. This year’s festival will be joined by celebrities, including Fabian and Lee An, who will present a total of 19 types of Seoul’s intangible cultural heritage and take part in hands-on programs, including brewing traditional Korean alcoholic beverages and trying traditional Korean archery.

This year’s festival will be held online to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while also introducing Seoul’s cultural heritage to more tourists both at home and abroad. Unlike the annual events held at Namsangol Hanok Village and Namsan Gugakdang, this event will provide more colorful and rich attractions in various spaces from Unhyeongung Palace and the Seoul Museum of Craft Art to master artisans’ own workshops.

Breaking the boundaries of being an online festival, the SMG has prepared three types of specially designed experience kits for citizens’ direct participation. A total of 1,400 experience kits will be distributed through events via social media and quiz participation so that citizens can easily follow along at home and experience Seoul’s cultural heritage by watching experts’ viewer friendly videos.

There will also be an online tour video (in Korean and English) featuring international residents who have lived in Korea for 41 years to learn about Seoul’s intangible heritage at the Seoul Intangible Cultural Heritage Center in Jongno-gu as well as the Seoul Museum of Craft Art, Seoul Museum of Korean Folk Music, and more.

Festival videos will be uploaded sequentially every day from Mon, Oct. 11 to Sat, Oct. 16 via YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/visitseoul; https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZRpVya0KOKuGfH58OX2mng). More details can be found on the Seoul Intangible Cultural Heritage Center website (http://www.seoulmaster.co.kr) and the Seoul Intangible Culture Festival’s Instagram and Facebook (@seoulmuhyeongmunhwa).
