Now, when two or more SMEs in Seoul cooperate to establish a daycare facility, they don’t have to pay for it!
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has decided to cover the remaining portion of expenses incurred in the establishment of workplace daycare facilities (60 percent of the building purchase cost and 10 to 20 percent of the remodeling cost) when they are set up through the cooperation of two SMEs. Currently, the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service of the Ministry of Employment and Labor is funding 40 percent of the building cost and 80 to 90 percent of the remodeling cost. So, the additional funding provided by Seoul Metropolitan Government covers all costs paid by the SMEs to build daycare facilities.
Currently, only about 80 daycare centers have been established in 1000 SME industrial complexes. But, Seoul Metropolitan Government has committed itself to resolving the issue of low birth rates among workers at SMEs by expanding daycare facilities in workplaces.
Today, at 2 pm in Seoul City Hall, the president of the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service, the president of the Korea Federation of SMEs, and others signed a business agreement regarding the establishment of daycare facilities in SMEs.
It would be difficult to resolve the low birth rate issue without fist resolving the childcare issues that workers at SMEs are struggling with. Beginning with this support for the establishment of daycare facilities at SMEs, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will increase the number of daycare facilities in Seoul, including national and public daycare centers and low-cost daycare centers in workplaces.
