Today, I got a report that Mr. Chun Gyeong-hwan, younger brother of President Chun Doo-hwan, agreed to Seoul Metropolitan Government’s confiscation of 180 million won from his pension fund as partial payment for the unpaid 622 million won in local income taxes.

We at Seoul Metropolitan Government are doing our best to put tax justice into practice through the special management of rich tax defaulters. We go as far as prohibiting them from leaving the country and pressuring them with the intention of putting their real estate up for auction.

A while ago, we collected 826 million won in unpaid taxes from a person whom we will identify only as “J,” who is in prison for his involvement in a financial scam, said to be the largest scale ever in this country during the 5th Republic. We also collected 794 million won in unpaid taxes from former Daewoo Group Chairman Kim Woo-Jung.

Rich people’s delayed tax payment can never be forgiven. We will do what we can to collect what is past due from them.
