Right after my inauguration as Seoul Mayor, I vowed that I would do my best to reduce the number of people, particularly children, in Seoul who are skipping meals due to poverty. The measures I took included the provision of three meals to schoolchildren during vacations.
A total of 52,000 children will be covered by this program. We at Seoul Metropolitan Government will spend 19,417 million won, or an 8.2% y-o-y increase, for this program.
The beneficiary children are selected by local children’s centers and social welfare centers. The selected children will have meals at local welfare centers or restaurants or have food delivered to them.
The number of restaurants accepting electronic cards issued to children for this purpose is increasing, with 1,803 added last January. At present, a total of 6,853 restaurants and 457 local children’s centers and social welfare centers are taking part in the program. We will tell restaurants that they should never make these children feel humiliated when the latter have meals using said electronic cards.
We will continue to take these measures for children. They are our future.
