View of Seoul City Hall’s interior vertical garden, Green Wall
Seoul City Hall has made the Guinness Book of Records for having the world’s largest interior vertical garden, known as the Green Wall. Seoul City Hall’s staffers wanted to get the city’s vertical garden included in the Guinness Book of Records to promote Seoul and its elaborate garden, which starts at the square that extends onto the wall. It was officially accepted on February 2nd, and received a certificate to prove it.
Some of you may have already seen the Echo Plaza in the new city hall building. The Green Wall is 28 meters (i.e. the equivalent of seven stories) high and covers an area of 1,516㎡. It is home to 65,000 plants of 14 different species.
The plants keep the air inside the building refreshing and clean by emitting negative ions and oxygen, as well as absorbing pollutants such as ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and fine dust. The Green Wall also has a calming effect.
It is said that inclusion in the Guinness Book of Records has a promotional effect that would be worth many thousands if not millions of dollars if done through an agent. But Seoul City’s staff managed to do it all by themselves, thereby saving money and doing something to be proud of.
The new city hall building is not without its flaws, but if we make good use of it I know it will be loved by Seoul residents. I am so proud of Seoul City Hall’s staff!
