SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, May 16, 2019 — The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the organizing committee of the Korea Theater Festival announced that they will hold the 37th “Korea Theater Festival in Seoul” from June 1 to 25. It is the nation’s largest and only country-wide theater event to be held in Seoul for the first time this year. The festival will start with the opening ceremony on June 1 at Daehangno Marronnier Park, with some 300 stage actors and actresses and citizens attending, and the 25-day festival will be held at Arko Arts Theater and Daehangno Marronier Park.

The time-honored Korea Theater Festival began as the National Theater Festival in 1983 to promote the local theater and cultures, and now celebrates the 37th anniversary this year. Since Seoul joined the festival in 2016, the festival has become a nationwide event. It will be the first of its kind to be held in Daehangno, a mecca of theater in Seoul, to become a truly leading theater event in Korea.

The organizing committee of the Korea Theater Festival (Seoul Theater Association) introduced the art director system for the first time, and selected the slogan, “A Theater Is Today, Today Is A Theater.”

A total of 58 diverse events are scheduled to take place for this year’s festival, including a final competition for play works from 16 major cities and provinces; a networking festival; a guest performance from home and abroad; an academic event; and an open-air program for citizens’ participation.

Another feature of this year’s festival is the structure of the organization: it is participated by various theater people, including both members and non-members of the National Theater Association. The steering committee was formed with various theater-related associations, and the Association’s non-members of actors and actresses also have an opportunity to be on the stage.
