The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) will install 44 indoor smart gardens* for citizens to find rest in their daily lives in 34 institutions by the end of 2021. Smart gardens are indoor gardens that allow people to enjoy greenery throughout the four seasons.

*Smart gardens are indoor gardens where plant management technology is introduced with an automatic watering, lighting and air conditioning system for indoor plants.
The SMG announced that it will actively install smart gardens to provide citizens with space for healing in consideration of the increased time spend indoors, such as at home and at work, and limited outdoor activities due to COVID-19.

Smart garden is a new-concept garden paradigm where the automatic control technology maintains and controls the plants that grow well indoors, such as parlour palm and coral, indoors in multi-purpose facilities, including parks, hospitals, and industrial complexes. According to the traits and structure of the space, the gardens can be installed in various ways, such as in cubes and hanging from walls.
The SMG expects that with smart gardens, it will minimize the costs for maintaining and controlling plants and maximize the effect of healing, resting, and appreciation. In particular, the gardens will allow not only medical staff and workers, but regular citizens to be appeased and relieve stress while enjoying the greenery regardless of the season.

According to the studies on the effect of healing and resting of the indoor gardens by the Korea Forest Service, people showed decreased psychological stress, such as tension, anxiety, fatigue, helplessness and depression, after being exposed to indoor gardens.

In 2020, the SMG installed smart gardens in six idle spaces in five medical/public facilities for the first time.

In 2021, the SMG will increase the budget more than 10 times and install 38 smart gardens in 29 facilities (14 industrial complexes, 4 medical institutions, and 20 public facilities). The SMG will establish the gardens not only in medical/public facilities, but also in industrial complexes. For efficient maintenance and control of plants, the smart gardens will be equipped with an automatic system to control watering, lighting, and air conditioning based on data of the growth of the plants, with IoT, WiFi, and touch panel technology.

The SMG will continue to expand the project in partnership with the Korea Forest Service based on the analysis of the project effect through monitoring and listening to the opinions of citizens on the installation of smart gardens.
