Hanyangdoseong, a fortress built during the Joseon Dynasty to defend the capital and its residents, has an average height of 5 to 8 meters and a total length of 18.6 kilometers. Originally built along the ridges of Bugaksan, Namsan and Inwangsan Mountains that surround the heart of Seoul, the fortress has undergone a number of reconstruction projects. Hanyangdoseong operated as a city wall for the capital of Joseon for 514 years, from 1396 until 1910, setting a world record. The architecture has four main gates and four small gates and 70% of the roads have been organized into six walking trails.
